Houses can represent our earliest memories, a sense of belonging and peace, beautiful pictures, lifelong attachments, dreams.....and nightmares! How can mere bricks and mortar, and a handful of acres, seize our imaginations, hold such emotional power, and carry such far-reaching effects? The desire to acquire, retain, or prevent ownership of property can drive some to extreme lengths, as we will see in the texts studied in this course. Term 1: Howard's End by EM Forster; Du Maurier's Rebecca; The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters; Henry James' Washington Square. Term 2: A House for Mr Biswas by VS Naipaul; The Glass Room by Simon Mawer; Mary Lovell's biography of Bess of Hardwick. We will also read some poems related to the theme of houses and homes. (Course fees payable in 2 instalments) Full Fee : £130 Concession A : £117
